What is CouchSurfer?

CouchSurfer is a peer-to-peer marketplace for budget couch stays. Verified travelers can book couches, spare rooms, and crash pads from real hosts for $5-$35 per night. It's community-driven and vibe-matched — not a hotel alternative, but a way to travel authentically.

How much does it cost?

Hosts set their own nightly rate between $5 and $35. Surfers pay a 5% service fee on top of the nightly rate. Hosts pay an 8% fee that's deducted from their payout. Students, veterans, retirees, and caregivers qualify for a free tier with waived surfer fees.

How does vibe matching work?

Both hosts and surfers select vibe tags (like "night owl," "420 friendly," "quiet workspace," etc.). CouchSurfer scores compatibility from 0-100 and shows Bronze, Silver, or Gold match tiers. Hard blocks exist for incompatible combinations (e.g., "sober" and "420 friendly").

Is it safe?

Every user verifies their email. Hosts complete Stripe identity verification to receive payouts. We offer optional background checks via Checkr. After each stay, both host and surfer leave reviews that are revealed simultaneously — so neither party can retaliate. Trust scores build over time.

How do payments work?

When a surfer books, we place a hold on their card (no charge yet). Once the host accepts, the hold is captured. After the stay, the host receives their payout minus the 8% fee via Stripe Connect. Refund policies depend on how far in advance you cancel.

How do I become a host?

Sign up, then click "List Your Couch" to create a listing. You'll need to connect a Stripe Express account to receive payouts. Add photos, set your nightly rate, describe the space, and select your vibe tags. Your listing goes live immediately.

What if I have a problem during my stay?

Use the in-app messaging system to communicate with your host or surfer. If you can't resolve the issue, contact us at support@getcouchsurfer.com and we'll help mediate. Disputed bookings are reviewed by our team.

Can I use CouchSurfer in my city?

CouchSurfer is currently available across the United States in 50+ cities. We're expanding — if you don't see listings in your area, be the first host and help build the community.

How do reviews work?

After a stay completes, both parties have 72 hours to leave a review. Reviews are hidden until both are submitted (or the deadline passes). This prevents retaliation and encourages honest feedback.
